Short answer
Some natural fabrics are commonly approved, but the fiber label is not enough, and school lists disagree. These are other schools’ lists, not approval for your machine. This applies to enclosed machines at Class 1 or Class 2 in the configuration you run.
These are other schools' lists, not approval for your machine, and they disagree. That is why the decision rests on your own documentation for the exact fabric, not on the fiber name.
Harvard’s lab approves woven cotton and wool felt. The University of Florida says fiber cloths and polyester cloths are fine and that other synthetic cloths must not contain the hazardous materials on its prohibited list. Emory, by contrast, prohibits anything marked flame-retardant, noting it creates harmful fumes and gases, along with PTFE, vinyl-containing foams, and self-adhesive or sticky-backed material.
The practical rule: approve the exact fabric with supplier documentation, including any treatment, coating, or backing. Do not cut fabric that has PVC, vinyl, PTFE, or adhesive backing, or fabric bonded to foam. MIT separately notes that foam core has been involved in fires at MIT and other locations. If you cannot identify the fabric or its finish, do not cut it.
Stay with the machine. Any flame means stop with the emergency stop or the switch you were trained to use; do not open the lid to look, move students away, and follow your school’s written fire procedure, which sets the shutdown sequence. Open-frame, open-bed, pass-through, converted, or Class 3B or Class 4 machines are outside this answer, and a laser safety officer and written program come first.
