Short answer

Require more than a video: equipment-specific training, a written or online test, an observed practical check and a training record, with your EH&S office or laser safety officer approving the result. No source we opened prescribes one complete pathway, so treat these as parts to combine.

Student authorization as parts to combine, ending in an approved record Four numbered cards in a row with arrows: equipment-specific training, a written or online test, an observed practical check, and a training record. Below, a bar says the EH&S office or laser safety officer approves the result, then an accent box says authorization starts only after every prerequisite is complete. Two panels list what the observed check looks at. Material: approved material flat, nothing else on the bed, the cut fits. Safety answers: names the stop control, knows any flame means stop, evacuates on a fire alarm, and will not run with smoke or fumes in the room. No source we opened prescribes one complete pathway, so read these as parts to combine. A video alone is not enough, and finishing an eligible course is not the same as authorization. Covers enclosed Class 1 or Class 2 machines; an authorized person stays present and able to stop each job.

This pathway is for enclosed machines that are Class 1 or Class 2 in the configuration you run. A machine that is Class 4 in normal use, such as an open-frame engraver, a pass-through or converted machine, or one of unknown class is not covered. Authorization for those comes through a laser safety officer and a laser safety program, both of which the education standard lists as required at Class 3B and 4. If none can be designated, the answer is not yet.

For a research-university lab, the University of Florida requires users to receive training from the investigator on the specific laser equipment, view a laser safety fundamentals presentation and take an online exam. Carnegie Mellon separates eligibility from safety training: completing an eligible course is not enough, and an eligible user must also complete all required safety training to get login privileges. That keeps course enrollment from being mistaken for permission.

An observed practical check is the natural last step. One university pre-flight checklist shows what such a check looks like: place approved material flat, make sure nothing else is on the bed and confirm the cut fits. Add the things every authorization should test: the trainee can name the stop control, knows that any flame means stop, knows to evacuate on a fire alarm, and will not run if smoke or fumes are in the room.

Keep a record. Michigan says training must be documented in a training roster for EHS review, and for Class 3B and 4 users the standard has the laser safety officer maintain training records. Activate authorization only after every prerequisite is complete, and require an authorized person to be present and able to stop each job for its whole duration.
